You may ignore the necessity of sunscreen on cloudy days, but the purpose of sunscreen products is more to block ultraviolet rays, which will penetrate clouds to our skin. Therefore our skin will be damaged by ultraviolet rays any day.
Know more about Ultraviolet Rays UV-A/ UV-B/ UV-C
UV-C:
Most ultraviolet rays in the atmosphere come from the sun, including three different wavelengths of ultraviolet rays: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. UV-C is absorbed by the atmosphere which will not reach the ground, while UV-A and UV-B can penetrate the clouds and irradiate to the ground.
UV-A:
UV-A has a longer wavelength which can penetrate clouds and glass. It is one of the main factors that cause skin ageing. It promotes the generation of free radicals of skin and negatively impacts on the decomposition of collagen and elastin, leading to skin sagging, wrinkles and pigmentation. UV-A may also suppress the function of the skin's immune system, increasing the risk of skin infections and diseases.
UV-B:
UV-B has a shorter wavelength and can only penetrate thin clouds and glass, directly irradiate our skin surface. UV-B is one of the main factors that cause sunburn and skin cancer. It damages DNA, melanocytes and cell mutation, and may lead to skin cancer. It is also the main factor that promotes the formation of skin pigmentation.
Therefore, long-term exposure to the sun will damage our skin. In order to protect the health of skin, it is recommended to use broad-spectrum sunscreen products during outdoor activities, which can effectively protect against two types of ultraviolet rays.
