Men’s Health and Common Diseases in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is generally a healthy place to live. The major diseases affecting men are similar to those in other modern countries: cancers, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and diabetes. These are the most serious conditions commonly seen in private clinics. Life expectancy for men in Hong Kong is excellent, with an average of 82.6 years.

Preventive Care in Family Practice

One of the main goals in family practice is to keep individuals healthy. It is recommended that men undergo a full medical examination every four years, or more frequently if specific health concerns require monitoring. A typical medical check-up includes:

  • Physical assessment by the doctor
  • Measurements of height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse
  • Calculation of BMI (Body Mass Index)
  • Laboratory tests such as complete blood count, cholesterol profile, diabetes screening, kidney and liver function tests, and thyroid function tests
  • Additional assessments such as an electrocardiogram, vitamin D level, and vitamin B12 level (especially for men over 60)

Men aged 50 should consider a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test. Those with a family history of prostate cancer, or belonging to higher-risk ethnic groups, should begin testing at age 45. If PSA levels are elevated, they should be monitored closely for about six months before considering further investigations such as biopsies.

Infectious and Seasonal Diseases

Hong Kong occasionally experiences outbreaks of infectious diseases such as dengue fever. Travelers returning from nearby countries may also import malaria and other tropical illnesses. During winter, flu-like illnesses are common, making vaccinations an important preventive measure.

Sexual Health

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have been increasing in Hong Kong. Chlamydia is the most prevalent, but gonorrhoea, syphilis, and HIV are also frequently diagnosed. Government-run STD clinics provide free services without requiring a referral. In private clinics, men are often shocked when diagnosed with conditions such as gonorrhoea.

Lifestyle and Metabolic Syndrome

Overall, Hong Kong remains a healthy place to live, provided individuals maintain a good lifestyle. Diabetes is one of the most pressing concerns. Men who do not follow healthy habits are at risk of developing metabolic syndrome, which includes fatty liver, obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Unfortunately, many men underestimate this risk, as they enjoy the vibrant social life Hong Kong offers. Every patient should be made aware of metabolic syndrome and the dangers of poor dietary choices.

Other Health Considerations

Patients should also be informed about the potential impact of electromagnetic interference from mobile phones charging beside the bed, which may disrupt sleep.
