Hepatitis Vaccination
Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by Hepatitis A virus (HAV), which is spread from person to person by contaminated food or drink.
Hepatitis B is caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) that attacks the liver. It can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death. Hepatitis B virus is transmitted through contact with blood and other body fluids of an infected person. A person can get infected in several ways, including having unprotected sex with an infected person, sharing needles when injecting illegal drugs, being stuck with a used needle on the job (e.g. health care and public safety workers), and during birth when the virus passes from an infected mother to her baby.
There is no treatment for either Hepatitis A or B, but vaccinations can prevent both.
