Celebrations on Mother's day are different worldwide. How can you make this day even special and unique for your mother? Let’s try to come up with different ways to celebrate mother's day this year, which the celebration and gift be fun and useful.

Traditional gifts

Flowers and sweets are always the traditional way to celebrate mother's day, and let’s try something out of the box this year. Think about your mother’s interest and personality. Let’s say your mom is techno-savvy, then a tablet can be the perfect mother's day gift. She will be able to enjoy music, movies, and the internet, read e-books, use social media etc. Tablets are more handy, lightweight and very sleek as compared to a laptop.

Mother’s Day Healthy Gift

Apart from the traditional gifts, you can offer something special and unique that not only show your love and care but is also useful for her. Everyone wants their mom to stay healthy and fit, so why not take a further step for it? A preventive health checkup for your mom will be a nice healthy gift on mother's day for her.

Moms tend to ignore their health while raising us, so it's our responsibility to take care of them, especially in their 50s and 60s when the immune system starts to weaken. You may gift a Premier health check plan for her and be there with her during the checkup. Remember, the gift itself may be delightful celebration, but having quality time and expression of love and care from loved ones are priceless.

Different health needs or conditions may arise as women go through different life stages, so it’s important to choose the screening programmes that meet their specific needs. Between age 35 to 49 years old, work and home are the major focuses. Proper diet, regular exercise, doctor visit for annual health checks are recommended to help you stay on track in these hectic years. For women aged 50 and above, they are more at risk for chronic diseases. And here are some common health conditions to face from aged 35 and above:

Cervical cancer

Cervical cancer mainly affects young women, mostly in their 30s and 40s, and it is the 9th commonest and the 8th leading cause of female cancer deaths in Hong Kong. Through regular screening and vaccination, it is preventable and treatable if diagnosed early.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among females in Hong Kong. It is the third leading cause of cancer deaths. An  effective and comprehensive breast health check-up exercise should include self-breast examination, clinical breast examination and mammography screening.

Diabetes mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disorder characterised by a raised blood glucose level resulting from insulin deficiency, insulin resistance, or both. Diabetes mellitus increases the risk of cerebrovascular disease, heart diseases, foot gangrene, retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy.

Hypertension is a chronic disease in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. If blood pressure stays at a high level over time, different health problems may arise, including stroke, coronary heart disease, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and even early death.

Heart diseases

Among different types of heart diseases, coronary heart disease constitutes a major portion of mortality. People with coronary heart disease may experience central crushing chest pain, precipitated by exertion and relieved by rest. The pain may radiate to the arm, shoulder, neck, and jaw. Indeed, there are many risk factors for coronary heart disease and many of them are preventable or treatable.

Osteoporosis (aged 50 and above)

Osteoporosis is a metabolic disease of the bone which leads to a reduction in bone density. The density of the affected bones becomes lower and the bones become more fragile, and therefore are more likely to break, resulting in fractures.
